Deciding on New Kitchen Counter Stools

Author: Jane Worthington

Very few people know exactly what they want when they go furniture shopping. They might have a vague idea of the style and color of the piece they want but if they have not been through a furniture showroom lately, they have no idea what is in store. It can be dangerous walking into a furniture store without a solid idea of what you need if you hope to walk out of there with something that afternoon. You have so many options when it comes to couches, tables, and chairs that it is easy to grow overwhelmed. The best idea is to do reconnaissance missions first in order to get a better idea of what choices are available. This method allows you plenty of time so that you can eliminate some possibilities without feeling rushed. When it comes to kitchen counter stools, you have more variety then you would have ever imagined!

The first way to eliminate your a majority of your choices is to determine the size of the stools you need. Will these chairs be needed for the kitchen island or the kitchen counter that separates the kitchen from the dining room? You need to measure the height between the bottom of the table to the floor and then subtract at least 20-30 inches from that total in order to determine the seat height of the bar stool you need. Once you have a reasonable height range, you can start looking at different styles and finishes.

Kitchen bar stools come in everything from finished mahogany wood to bamboo to plastic. Since these chairs will be in the kitchen, you have to make sure they are ready from some abuse. People will move them from room to room, spill food and drinks on them, and bang into them every once in awhile. Therefore, you need to invest in a set of kitchen chairs that will be able to withstand the wear and tear and still look good at the end of the day.

Once the height and the material are decided, the last factor you need to consider is the design. Do you want the traditional backless bar stools, or would you prefer something that has a back, armrests, and foot rests? Would you like the chair to swivel or stay in place? There are more options then you can possibly imagine!

Shopping for kitchen counter stools does not have to be a difficult task. Go in prepared and you will find the stool that you want in no time!
